WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — The Roman Catholic Bishop of Worcester has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is scheduled undergo surgery next month.
Bishop Robert McManus in a letter to diocesan priests said the cancer was discovered about six weeks ago during a routine physical examination.
Diocese spokesman Raymond Delisle tells The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/1lZk8Nn ) the bishop opted for an operation after undergoing tests and after consulting with physicians.
Delisle says the 62-year-old bishop put off the surgery given his busy schedule in May and June, which includes confirmations, ordination ceremonies and high school and college commencements.
McManus plans to convalesce in July and take some vacation time.
He has been Worcester bishop for 10 years.
