RENO, Nev. (AP) — A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer to grope a teenager in Reno. Police say an 18-year-old female was depositing money at a bank late yesterday night when the man presented himself as an off-duty officer. After directing her to his vehicle featuring flashing amber lights, the suspect is accused of searching her while pressing up against her and trying to reach down her pants. The suspect fled the scene after the teen pushed him away and requested a marked police car.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Crews are being hampered by rugged terrain in their battle against a 100-acre wildfire in the north end of the Mt. Rose Wilderness Area near Reno. Sierra Front Interagency spokeswoman Elizabeth Kenna says one helicopter crew is dropping water on the blaze while another helicopter crew is taking firefighters to the Carson Range roadless area around Hunter Creek. She says no structures are threatened, but the fire is only 5 percent contained.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Aimal Halim used to dream of coming to America when he was working as an interpreter in his native Afghanistan for the Nevada Army National Guard. Not only did he make the trip, he ended up earning a degree in political science at the University of Nevada, Reno this week thanks in large part to a Guard officer who befriended him. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports Lt. Col. Kurt Neddenriep promised Halim in 2009 he would pay for his college education if he got accepted at Nevada.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A state panel has effectively killed a bid to name a Lake Tahoe cove for Mark Twain, citing opposition from a tribe who claims he held racist views on Native Americans. The Nevada State Board on Geographic Names this week voted to indefinitely table the request after hearing opposition from the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, whose ancestral homeland includes Tahoe. Tribal representative Darrel Cruz says Twain is undeserving of the honor because he made derogatory comments about the Washoe and other tribes in his literature.
