MILWAUKEE (AP) — The University of Wisconsin ranks among the top 10 U.S. medical schools in producing graduates who go into family practice.
That's an encouraging trend that could help stem an expected shortfall of doctors.
A report this week says that one in six UW medical school graduates entered family practice in the last three years. The school's No. 9 ranking in that category suggests Wisconsin's efforts to produce more doctors are working, especially to produce physicians willing to practice in rural areas.
Using federal and state programs, UW is providing more resources to study family practice and do residencies in rural areas.
That's important because more than half of graduates nationwide who do their residencies in rural areas stay in rural areas.
