WASHINGTON (AP) — GM is admitting that it took too long to tell regulators about a defect in an ignition switch in millions of cars. And it's promising to report problems more quickly in the future, under an agreement today with the Transportation Department. The company is being hit with a record $35 million fine -- but safety advocates say that's too small to deter bad behavior by automakers.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A state fire official says a spark from construction equipment ignited the first of 10 major fires that ignited in San Diego County this week. The state Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman says investigators believe the blaze that charred more than 1,500 acres in the Rancho Bernardo suburb was accidental. She says causes of the other fires have not been determined. Officials are looking into everything from car sparks to arson as possibilities.
COLUMBUS (AP) — One of the Watergate conspirators has died. Jeb Stuart Magruder spent seven months in prison for lying about the involvement of Richard Nixon's re-election committee in the 1972 break-in at Washington's Watergate complex -- which eventually led to Nixon's resignation. A funeral director says Magruder died Sunday in Connecticut. He was 79.
WASHINGTON (AP) — On this 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court's historic ruling against segregated schools, President Barack Obama is meeting with families of the plaintiffs, as well as two of the lead attorneys in the case. In a statement, Obama says the nation should recommit itself to stamping out "bigotry and racism in all their forms."
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is inviting India's next prime minister to visit Washington despite a previous U.S. decision to deny him a visa in 2005. The White House says Obama called Narendra Modi (nuh-REHN'-druh MOH'-dee) today to congratulate him on his party's success in the election. The U.S. denied Modi a visa in 2005 for alleged complicity in deadly religious riots in 2002. But the White House says Obama has invited Modi to visit when the timing works for both sides.
