SAN DIEGO (AP) — Two homes have caught fire in the Southern California city of Carlsbad, where a brush fire has forced the evacuation of thousands of people. City officials say more than 11,000 evacuation notices have been sent to homes and businesses. The blaze is one of several that firefighters in San Diego County are battling amid hot, dry, windy conditions.
SOMA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's energy minister says at least 274 people are dead in that country's worst mining disaster ever. The fate of another 150 miners is unclear. Rescue workers are still trying to reach people trapped underground after the fire and explosion yesterday at the mine south of Istanbul.
ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Britain's top government official on Africa says Nigeria's president is ruling out the possibility of releasing jailed militants in exchange for more than 270 schoolgirls who are being held by an Islamic extremist group. Mark Simmonds tells journalists in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, that President Goodluck Jonathan had "made it very clear that there will be no negotiation with Boko Haram (BOH'-koh hah-RAHM') that involves a swap of abducted schoolgirls for prisoners." Boko Haram has killed more than 1,500 people this year in a campaign of bombings and massacres.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have ended the day lower. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 101 points. The Nasdaq composite index was down 29. And the Standard & Poor's 500 lost eight points after reaching a new high yesterday.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — An American Airlines flight going from Arkansas to Dallas has made an emergency landing in Oklahoma after the pilot reported mechanical issues. American Airlines says the MD-80 carrying 142 passengers landed at Tulsa International Airport and was being examined by mechanics. No injuries were reported.
