DOSWELL, Va. (AP) — More than 100 searchers are scouring the woods and fields in central Virginia where a hot air balloon with three people aboard crashed last night. The bodies of the pilot and a passenger have been recovered. But a spokeswoman for the family of Natalie Lewis, director of basketball operations and former swimmer at the University of Richmond, says Lewis is still missing.

HEARNE, Texas (AP) — Officials in a small town in central Texas say they have decided to fire a police officer who shot and killed an armed 93-year-old woman during a confrontation at her home. KBTX-TV reports the city council unanimously voted today to fire Officer Stephen Stem, who shot and killed Pearlie Golden on Tuesday. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

UNDATED (AP) — Dozens of people in southern Utah are protesting against what they call the federal government's overreaching control of public lands. And today they rode their ATVs and motorcycles along an off-limits trail. The San Juan County Sheriff says from 40 to 50 people drove about a mile down Recapture Canyon near Blanding and then turned around.

EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas is allowing the marriage of same-sex couples. On Friday, a Little Rock judge struck down a ban approved by voters 10 years ago. He said there was no rational reason for it. But he didn't issue a stay, so local clerks can decide whether to grant licenses. Most courthouses are closed today. The attorney general has appealed to the state Supreme Court.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — There's growing international outrage over the way Nigeria's president has handled the abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls by Islamic extremists. For weeks, he refused international offers of help. Both the British and the U.S. say they offered help the day after the kidnappings. Only this week did Nigeria accept help from the U.S., Britain, France and China.
