ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A suspended University of Michigan student has sued the school, claiming it denied his rights in a sexual misconduct investigation.
The Ann Arbor News and Detroit Free Press report Wednesday that 21-year-old Drew Sterrett filed lawsuits last month in Washtenaw County and federal court in Detroit. It alleges the Ann Arbor school committed violations while investigating a sexual encounter between him and another student in March 2012 in a residence hall.
Sterrett says the encounter was consensual and the woman didn't report it until July of that year. He hasn't been charged with any crimes.
University officials say in a statement they are reviewing the lawsuits and plan "to defend them vigorously."
The school is among 55 colleges and universities facing federal investigation for their handling of sexual abuse allegations.
