HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities say a resident of a Houston-area nursing home has attacked another resident with a fitness weight, leaving the victim critically injured.

A spokeswoman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office says a male resident was being detained and questioned Tuesday. Tebben (TEB'-en) Lewis says no charges were immediately filed following Monday night's attack.

The incident happened at HMG Park Manor of Cypress Station. A statement Tuesday from the owner, HMG Healthcare LLC, says the safety and well-being of residents and staff are a priority.

Lewis says the victim was in stable but critical condition when transported to a Houston hospital. She says he apparently was struck with some type of weight.

She had no information on how the men knew each other or whether they were roommates.
