FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Officials say a vintage biplane has crashed while performing at a Northern California air show and the pilot was killed. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says the plane was a Stearman biplane and part of the Thunder Over Solano airshow at Travis Air Force Base in Solano County. No spectators were injured.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Nine circus performers are being treated at a hospital after being seriously injured at a show today in Providence, Rhode Island. Officials say a platform collapsed during an aerial hair-hanging stunt which is part of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus' Legends show. Inspectors haven't yet determined what caused the accident.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) —Authorities in Tennessee say bystanders helped subdue a pedestrian who climbed into a Memphis police car and reached for an officer's gun. People watching from the corner ran to the car, pulled the man out and helped subdue him until more officers arrived. Police say the suspect was confronted Saturday after walking in traffic and trying to hit passing cars.
PHOENIX (AP) — A U.S. Air Force official says two Chinese sailors died and six are believed to be missing after their boat sank in the Pacific Ocean. The official says a Venezuelan fishing boat reported finding 11 sailors in a raft on Friday. She says the boat's crew says four of the sailors were badly burned and two later died. Airmen from the 563rd Rescue Group treated the injured sailors.
LONDON (AP) — Former top-50 professional tennis player Elena Baltacha has died. She was 30. Baltacha had been fighting liver cancer since retiring from the game. The Lawn Tennis Association announced the death on its website, with former Fed Cup coach Iain Bates describing Baltacha as "a true role model, a great competitor and a wonderful friend."
