VATICAN CITY (AP) — History has been made at the Vatican, where two past popes have been declared saints in a ceremony that featured two living pontiffs, Pope Francis and his retired predecessor, Benedict. Hundreds of thousands of people swelled St. Peter's square for the canonization of Popes John the 23rd and John Paul the second.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A diminished feeling of promise is combining with the overall sense of pride today in South Africa, which is celebrating 20 years of democracy with songs and speeches. Some note that economic inequality and other problems have undermined their nation's promise since the first all-race elections on April 27, 1994 ended white rule.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — President Barack Obama says there's strong evidence Russia is encouraging destabilizing activities in eastern and southern Ukraine, but that Western unity will be a deterrent. He says the U.S. and Europe must act collectively on sanctions so President Vladimir Putin sees the world is unified.

JINDO, South Korea (AP) — The deadly ferry sinking has resulted in the largely symbolic resignation of South Korea's prime minister. Power is concentrated in the president's office. The president accepted her prime minister's resignation. In an extraordinary resignation statement to reporters, the prime minister blamed "deep-rooted evils" in society for the tragedy that left more than 300 people dead or missing.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — An international rights group is urging passage of a law to be proposed in Yemen setting 18 as the minimum age to get married. Human Rights Watch says in a statement that the draft law will be presented to the government today by the legal affairs minister. In a December 2011 report, the group said about 14 percent of girls in Yemen were married before age 15. It also said 52 percent were wed before they turned 18.
