AAAS - FORUM ON SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY POLICY CONVENES — Reproducibility in science, a critical component for research progress, will be the topic of a special session at the 39th annual AAAS Forum on Science & Technology Policy. Highlights:

Afternoon plenary session on "Emerging Technologies and National Security featuring Jason Lee, National Intelligence Officer for science and technology-based threats at the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Margaret E. Kosal, associate director of the Sam Nunn Security Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology; and Bradley R. Ringeisen, head of the bioenergy and biofabrication section, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

9:30 a.m. The Forum will examine the reproducibility issue in a morning session. The featured speakers are Story Landis, director, National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke; Robert M. Golub, deputy editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA); Ariella Kelman, group medical director for immunology and infectious diseases at Genentech, a member of the Roche Group; and Brian Nosek, associate professor of psychology, University of Virginia. Mark S. Frankel, director of the AAAS Scientific Responsibility, Human Rights and Law Program, will respond to the presentations as a prelude to general discussion. Katrina Kelner, editor of Science Translational Medicine, will moderate the session.

May 1 - 3. COMMUNITY VIOLENCE CONFERENCE — Leaders in Psychology and Law Address Family, Community Violence. "Confronting Family and Community Violence: The Intersection of Law and Psychology," a national conference co-sponsored by the American Psychological Association and American Bar Association, will explore the impact of violence on children, families and communities and its prevalence and prevention in the home, community and society. The 38 presentations and panels will cover topics including gun violence, hate crimes, racial profiling and stand- your-ground laws, elder abuse, violent sex offenders, human trafficking, juvenile justice reform, intimate partner violence, school violence and bullying.
