HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) — Hamden officials say they've imposed a one-year moratorium on new permits for off-campus college student housing because of loud partying, parking problems and other issues bothering local residents.
The town's Planning and Zoning Commission approved the moratorium Tuesday night and it will go into effect May 15.
Hamden is home to Quinnipiac University and the Paier College of Art, and Southern Connecticut State University is in nearby New Haven. Off-campus property owners in Hamden who want to rent to students must obtain student housing permits from the town.
Assistant Town Planner Dan Kops says the moratorium won't affect the existing 223 permits, most of which involve Quinnipiac students. He says town officials will be reviewing local housing regulations during the moratorium to see if improvements can be made.
