LAS VEGAs (AP) — Officials have received at least 178 applications from people seeking to start medical marijuana-related businesses in Clark County. The number includes 60 applications related to cultivation, 77 in the dispensary category, one in the laboratory category and 40 in production. Legislators passed a law in 2013 that sets up a framework for distributing medical marijuana, although it allows cities and counties to impose moratoriums.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nine projects to help preserve and project Lake Tahoe have been awarded grant funding from the Nevada Division of State Lands. The money comes from the sale of Lake Tahoe specialty license plates that last year generated $350,000. Officials say the Lake Tahoe license plates have generated more than $6.7 million since they became available in 1998. The proceeds have funded about 100 projects.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — First lady Kathleen Sandoval is encouraging Nevadans to wear blue jeans today to promote Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day. The Denim Day campaign evolved in the 1990s from a ruling by Italy's Supreme Court. Justices overturned a rape conviction, saying that because the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her attacker remove her pants, thereby implying consent. The next day women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in a show of solidarity.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Food Network star Guy Fieri's restaurant is now open for business on the Las Vegas Strip. Guy Fieri's Vegas Kitchen & Bar is located at the Quad Resort & Casino and welcomed its first customers last week. Fieri is known for several Food Network series, including "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." He graduated from UNLV in 1990.
