MOKPO, South Korea (AP) — A high school vice principal who survived the ferry sinking in South Korea has apparently taken his own life -- after leaving a note saying he felt guilty for being alive while more than 200 students are missing. The vice principal was among those rescued from the sinking ferry Wednesday. His body was found today, hanging from a tree on the island where the survivors were taken. He was the leader of a group of 325 students traveling on the ferry on a school excursion.

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — The world's highest mountain has seen its deadliest-ever disaster today. As Nepalese Sherpa guides worked to set up ropes for other climbers on Mount Everest, an avalanche swept down the climbing route. At least 12 of the guides were killed, and four others are missing.

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — The leader of one of the pro-Russian insurgent groups that have taken control of government buildings in eastern Ukraine in recent days is rejecting the diplomatic deal reached yesterday in Geneva, under which the insurgents are supposed to return the buildings to Ukrainian authorities. He says they don't recognize Ukraine's government as legitimate -- and won't leave the buildings until the country's interim government resigns. The agreement among the U.S., the European Union, Russia and Ukraine was supposed to help ease tensions in Ukraine.

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. financial markets -- along with those in Europe and parts of Asia -- are closed for the Good Friday holiday. In Asian countries where trading took place earlier today, stocks were mostly higher. Stocks on Wall Street finished mostly higher yesterday, despite a drop in shares of Google and IBM, which reported disappointing earnings on Wednesday.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Stormy weather in Florida may bring another delay in the launch of a critical delivery flight to the International Space Station. The launch by SpaceX, which is NASA's commercial supplier, had been foiled by a leaky rocket valve earlier in the week. The valve has been replaced. The unmanned cargo ship contains more than two tons of station supplies, including material for some urgent computer repairs.
