INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The national spotlight is on Indiana's education leaders as they speed toward a deadline to replace Common Core learning standards with benchmarks crafted by the state.
Indiana became the first state to drop the Common Core in March. The State Board of Education is scurrying to finish new guidelines to replace them by June. Officials are pushing for a vote April 28.
But frustration with the short deadline and confusion about the review process could mean delays.
Officials now must balance pressure to get the draft approved before teachers start their summer planning against the need to address potential criticism of the standards before the final vote.
