SLOVYANSK, Ukraine (AP) — It's the first report of a gunbattle in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian gunmen have seized a number of government buildings in recent days. Ukraine's interior minister says special forces exchanged gunfire with a pro-Russian militia in the eastern city of Slovyansk,with at least one security officer killed and five others wounded.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah says he's held talks with rival Zalmai Rassoul -- but that it's too soon to talk about a possible alliance. Shortly after partial results were announced today, Abdullah said he will seek a unity government. The results show a tight race between Abdullah and former finance minister Ashraf Ghani. Abdullah says Ghani would not be part of any unity government, but could "serve as a loyal opposition."
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has tossed aside his prepared homily on this Palm Sunday -- instead speaking entirely off-the-cuff to a crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square. He called on people -- himself included -- to look into their own hearts to see how they are living their lives. And then the pontiff helped some in the crowd take a look at themselves -- by hopping off his popemobile to pose for "selfies" with young people.
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — At least seven people are dead in a fire raging in the Chilean port city of Valparaiso. Officials say the fire has destroyed 500 homes. Thousands of people have been evacuated, including more than 200 female inmates at a prison. High winds have been raining hot ash over the wooden houses and narrow streets of the city.
NEW YORK (AP) — Jury selection is set to begin tomorrow in the New York trial of an Egyptian Islamic preacher extradited from Great Britain on charges he conspired to support al-Qaida. Mustafa Kamel Mustafa (muh-STAH'-fuh kah-MEHL' muh-STAH'-fuh) has alerted his lawyers and the judge that he intends to testify. He faces charges that he conspired to support al-Qaida by trying in 1999 to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon and by helping abduct two American tourists and 14 others in Yemen in 1998. Four hostages died.
