SLOVYANSK, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's interior minister says a gunfight with pro-Russian militia holding a police station has killed a security officer and wounded five others. An Associated Press reporter on the ground didn't see any unrest there when he arrived. Eastern Ukraine has a large Russian-speaking, pro-Moscow population.

BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say shelling and firefights between Syrian government forces and rebels in the northern city of Aleppo have killed at least 16 rebels and 13 civilians. The Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights says the civilians died when government aircraft dropped barrel bombs on the city's three rebel-held districts yesterday. Aleppo is a key front in the civil war.

PERTH, Australia (AP) — Air and sea crews are desperately trying to whittle down the search area in an enormous patch of deep ocean in their quest to find a missing Malaysian airliner, even though there's been no recent hint of underwater signals thought to have come from the plane's black boxes. The silence could mean the locator beacons' batteries have finally died following four strong signals in the past week.

BEIJING (AP) — A bus accident that killed eight elementary school students and injured 32 others last week has resulted in the detention of five people in southern China. The Hainan provincial government's website says those detained include the driver and an executive with the bus company. The principal of the private school, its chief investor and her husband were also detained. The official Xinhua News Agency said no special safety arrangements had been made with local authorities.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Tens of thousands of Romans, tourists and pilgrims crowded St. Peter's square today as Pope Francis celebrated Mass as part of a solemn Palm Sunday service. Palm Sunday begins Holy Week, which culminates next Sunday on Easter.
