ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Two students wounded in a Roswell school shooting in January threw the ceremonial first pitch at Isotopes Park.
Twelve-year-old Nathaniel Tavarez and 13-year-old Kendal Sanders stood on the diamond Friday night to launch baseball season for the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Both youths were seriously hurt when a fellow student randomly fired a shotgun in a gymnasium filled with his classmates.
Tavarez spent weeks in hospitals and rehab facilities for wounds to his chest, heart, face and head. He has lost much of his vision.
However, he and Sanders both smiled as they were escorted off the field by former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda and the Isotopes mascot.
A Roswell judge ruled March 28 that the 12-year-old boy accused of opening fire is competent to stand trial.
