THE DRINK — One of the greatest gifts of modern technology is the unpredictability of live TV. Well, as long as you’re not a TV reporter.
The Internet is full of reporters’ flubs, mumbles, human interactions and battles with the elements. Some are a little scary and uncomfortable, and some are comedy genius that could never be scripted.
Reporters are often asked to include creative settings and actions in their shots to give a little visual interest to the viewer. Sometimes this means taking a little walk, shooting outside or picking a unique place for an interview.
This Dutch reporter chose all three.
At first it looks like smooth sailing as she breezes toward the camera and confidently leans against the railing. She even begins the interview without a hitch.
But just because a rope looks taut and secure in your peripheral vision, doesn’t mean it is. And she certainly learned this the hard way when she took a surprising swim.
Based on the reporter’s yelps that water must be cold.
Kudos to the interviewee for taking off his swag in anticipation of helping, the boom mic operator for potentially sacrificing his equipment, the off-camera helper who quickly threw the reporter a lifesaver, and the reporter herself for giving us a moment of pure comedy gold.
