VIENNA (AP) — There's less than three months to the deadline for a long-term deal as Iran and six world powers begin another round of talks today aimed at narrowing what are said to be substantial differences. The scope of Iran's uranium enrichment program is the toughest issue. The U.S, Britain, France and Germany don't want Iran to enrich weapons-grade materials.
PERTH, Australia (AP) — Today marks exactly one month since Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 disappeared, a significant date because the battery life for locator beacons on the black boxes is about a month. Officials say search crews have heard only silence today as they try to relocate faint sounds heard deep in the Indian Ocean which might have come from the beacons over the weekend.
BEIJING (AP) — State media report 22 coal miners remain trapped as rescuers in southern China struggle to pump water from a flooded coal mine, hampered by narrow passageways and a lack of electricity. The Xinhua (shin-wah) News Agency says four miners escaped following the flooding, which was apparently caused by blasting on an upper level. China's mines are notoriously deadly.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A social media network built to stir unrest in Cuba is the focus of several hearings on Capitol Hill this week including one today. First up to question the administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development is Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, who publicly called the program "dumb." Leahy heads an appropriations subcommittee. Hearings are also scheduled before a House appropriations subcommittee as well as the foreign relations committees of both houses.
LONDON (AP) — Researchers say they've succeeded in getting three paralyzed men to stand and move their toes or legs, duplicating results three years ago on another man whose spinal cord was zapped with electricity. The researchers are quick to point out this is not a cure and the men can't walk, but doctors say it is promising.
