NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have turned lower in afternoon trading, after opening with some gains. Technology stocks are leading indexes lower. The government reported today that U.S. employers added more workers to their payrolls last month, but the overall report presented a mixed picture. The unemployment rate remained at 6.7 percent.
CINCINNATI (AP) — A federal judge says he will strike down part of Ohio's voter-approved ban on gay marriage, meaning the state must recognize marriages of gay couples who legally wed elsewhere. Judge Timothy Black made the statement today following final arguments in a lawsuit that challenged the constitutionality of the marriage ban. His ruling will not mean Ohio has to allow couples to marry in the state.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — As Afghanistan prepares to vote tomorrow for a new president and provincial councils, a shooting attack has left an Associated Press photographer dead, and a veteran correspondent wounded. The two women were in a car inside a security forces base in eastern Afghanistan when an Afghan police commander opened fire. It's the first known case of an insider attack aimed at journalists. Photographer Anja Niedringhaus (AHN'-yuh NEE'-dring-hows) died, and correspondent Kathy Gannon is in stable condition after surgery.
IQUIQUE, Chile (AP) — Officials in Chile say some essential services, like water, fuel and electricity, are being re-established, three days after a powerful earthquake. Hundreds of aftershocks have rattled the country's far northern regions since Tuesday's quake, which killed six people and damaged thousands of homes.
DANVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Three children have died in a Pennsylvania house fire. It happened overnight outside Danville, about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Fire officials say a woman and six children lived in the home. The mother wasn't home, and two of the children managed to get out. Another child was sleeping at a friend's house. The fire chief says the children who died were ages 2, 7 and 13.
