FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — Authorities say a soldier who opened fire on fellow soldiers at Ford Hood, Texas, Wednesday was an Iraq War veteran who was being treated for mental illness. Ivan Lopez allegedly killed three people and wounded or injured 16 others before killing himself. A senior officer at Fort Hood says Lopez had sought help for depression and other problems, and was being evaluated to determine whether he had post-traumatic stress disorder.

IQUIQUE, Chile (AP) — No new major damage is being reported following a powerful 7.6-magnitude aftershock along Chile's far-northern coast. Just the day before, an 8.2-magnitude earthquake caused six deaths and damaged thousands of homes. Officials have issued a new tsunami alert and are telling people to keep out of low-lying areas near the coast.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani police say a bomb has exploded near a convoy carrying former President Pervez Musharraf in the capital of Islamabad, but the former ruler was not harmed. Police say the bomb went off as Musharraf was being moved late Wednesday night from a military hospital in Rawalpindi to his home in Islamabad. There's been no claim of responsibility for the attack. But the Pakistani Taliban has vowed to kill him.

MCCANDLESS, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania pastor says the woman accused of trying to drown two of her sons by sitting on them in the bathtub had backed into the boys with her van 10 months ago. But Pastor Dan Hendley of North Park Church in Wexford says Laurel Michelle Schlemmer didn't see her sons behind the van and it was simply a "terrible accident" that left one boy with internal injuries and the other not able to walk for a time. Now Schlemmer is accused of drowning her 3-year-old and leaving her 6-year-old in critical condition.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Yahoo says it's added more layers of security to keep the government and others from snooping on its customers. Yahoo says all information being transmitted from on Yahoo data center to another will be encrypted. And search requests made from Yahoo's home page are also now automatically encrypted.
