BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — A court in Serbia has acquitted a well-known underworld figure and convicted two other suspects in the 2008 killing of a Croatian journalist who wrote about Balkan organized crime.
Judges ruled Wednesday there is not enough evidence to prove that Sreten Jocic orchestrated the bombing that killed journalist Ivo Pukanic and an associate. The Organized Crime Court also sentenced two other men to 40 and five years in prison for helping plant the explosives outside Nacional newspaper offices in the Croatian capital of Zagreb.
Although he was acquitted of this crime, Jocic stays in prison, serving a separate 15-year sentence for another killing.
Several other people already have been sentenced in Croatia in connection with Pukanic's murder. Pukanic's articles had focused mostly on cigarette smuggling in the postwar Balkans.
