ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's former military ruler is under indictment today on charges that could get him the death penalty. A special Pakistani court leveled five counts of high treason against Pervez Musharraf, a sharp blow to the country's powerful military which has taken power in three coups since 1947. It's the first time that an acting or former army chief has been indicted for treason.
JERUSALEM (AP) — A former Israeli leader is facing prison in a wide-ranging bribery case. The conviction today of former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (EH'-hood OHL'-murt) is also likely to rule out any immediate hopes for a political comeback. A total of 13 government officials, developers and other businesspeople were charged.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A flare-up of animosity between the rival Koreas has made a big splash as North and South Korea fired artillery shells into each other's waters today. Officials say it also forced residents of five front-line South Korean islands to evacuate to shelters. Authorities say the South Korean artillery fire came in response to North Korean shells falling south of a disputed boundary.
DETROIT (AP) — Congress has lots of questions for General Motors about its handling of a safety defect but one of the big ones is, if GM knew it had a problem, why wasn't something done to fix it? General Motors CEO Mary Barra and federal regulators will be on House and Senate subcommittee hot seats this week about the delayed recall over a faulty ignition switch on some small cars which is linked to 13 deaths.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Prosecutors say Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez should spend 27 years in prison for shooting at the White House in 2011. Defense lawyers argue for 10 years, saying he was suffering from extreme depression and was under the misguided belief that Armageddon was coming. A federal judge makes the sentencing decision today. A charge of attempting to assassinate the president was dropped in a plea deal in 2013.
