More objects spotted during plane search...US, Russia discuss Ukraine...Apple and Samsung go at each other again

PERTH, Australia (AP) — An Australian pilot involved in the search for the Malaysian jetliner says his crew spotted some "promising leads" today. He says they saw at least four orange objects that were more than 6 feet in size. He says they dropped a GPS buoy so that ships can investigate what the objects are.

PARIS (AP) — Russia says it has "absolutely no intention of, or interest in, crossing Ukraine's borders." Despite the assurances repeated today by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (SEHR'-gay LAHV'-rahf), U.S., European and Ukrainian officials are deeply concerned about the build-up of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border. Secretary of State John Kerry is discussing Ukraine with his Russian counterpart today in Paris.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt has set the dates for its next presidential election. The electoral commission has announced that the first round of voting will take place May 26 and 27, with results expected by June 5. If a second round is necessary it will be held by mid-month with results announced no later than June 26. The former military chief behind the ouster of the last president is expected to win.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The fiercest rivalry in the world of smartphones is heading back to court this week. Apple and Samsung are again accusing each other of ripping off designs and features. The trial starting tomorrow comes less than two years after a federal jury found Samsung infringed on Apple patents. In this case, Apple is accusing Samsung of infringing on five patents on newer devices, including Galaxy smartphones and tablets. In a counterclaim, Samsung says Apple stole two of its ideas to use on iPhones and iPads.

NEW YORK (AP) — Affordable housing is one of the next items on the agenda for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh), now that state lawmakers have closed a budget deal to fund prekindergarten in New York City. De Blasio wants to create 200,000 units of affordable housing in 10 years. He's looking to get developers to add cheaper units in their projects. And he wants the state to give him greater control over rent regulations, legalize more cellar apartments and rezone more neighborhoods for mixed-use development.
