SUGAR CITY, Idaho (AP) — The skyline of the eastern Idaho community of Sugar City has a different look now.
Hundreds of people on Saturday witnessed the controlled demolition of a grain elevator that has been a part of the community for more than 100 years.
The 110-foot tall silo built in the early 1900s appeared defiant for a moment, buckling at first but still standing straight after the charges exploded. But the structure then slowly rocked back and tipped over, enveloped in smoke, dust and debris.
The demolition took about 10 seconds.
While the event created excitement, many long-time Sugar City residents were sad to see it go.
Officials say the silo was a health hazard and numerous attempts to save it failed.
Sugar City is about 30 miles northeast of Idaho Falls.
