GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Police in the South American country of Guyana say they have issued an arrest warrant for a 21-year-old mother after her two young children were fatally poisoned.

Police said Friday that the woman is under guard while being treated at a hospital in the capital of Georgetown for swallowing a poisonous substance. She has not yet been charged.

Authorities said the children died Thursday in the rural village of Mahaicony southeast of Georgetown. They were 1 and 4 years old.
