DSS HEARING

COLUMBIA — A Greenville woman told lawmakers Wednesday that Department of Social Services officials misinformed her family about the difficulties of adopting a teenage boy out of foster care, a situation she said has caused them immeasurable strain. "Families are being pushed to adopt older children without being fully informed about the extent of the social needs and brokenness of these older children," Winton Swanson testified before a special Senate subcommittee. MCCONNELL-STATE OF AGING

COLUMBIA — Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell warned lawmakers Wednesday that a failure to prepare for South Carolina's oncoming "gray tsunami" will cause a budget crisis and human tragedies. McConnell told a joint session of the Legislature the state's senior population is expected to double over the next 15 years, to nearly 2 million people ages 60 and older. He urged legislators to develop a long-term plan that focuses on programs that help seniors live independently in their own homes. F-35-BEAUFORT

COLUMBIA — The Marine Corps in South Carolina is getting its first futuristic F-35 fighter jets in June, a commander from the Air Station in Beaufort announced Wednesday. Marine Air Group 31 commander Col. Bill Leiblien told members of the South Carolina Military Base Task Force that the first of dozens of aircraft and pilots are due to arrive by early to mid-June.
