COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) — An eighth-grader from South Burlington has won the Vermont Spelling Bee with the winning word "pogrom."
Liam Lustberg of Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School bested 40 other students from across the state Wednesday to win and go on to the national competition in June.
A pogrom is "an organized massacre and looting of helpless people, usually with the connivance of officials."
Lustberg pronounced and spelled the word correctly in round 26.
Lucinda Storz, a fifth-grader at Thaddeus Stevens School in Lyndon, came in second. Isabelle Petrucci, a seventh-grader at Albert D. Lawton Middle School in Esssex, came in third.
