RENO MAYOR
20 candidates jam crowed field for Reno mayor
(Information in the following story is from: Reno Gazette-Journal, http://www.rgj.com)
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno's first competitive race for mayor in more than a decade has drawn a field of 20 candidates.
One of them is actually named Reno — Charles "Chuck" Reno. Another, Larry Pizorno, is known as the "Wolf Man" because of the wolf pelt he wears on his head to Nevada Wolf Pack football games.
Others seeking to replace outgoing three-term Mayor Bob Cashell include Washoe County Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler and first-term Reno City councilwoman Hillary Schieve
City Clerk Lynette Jones tells the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://tinyurl.com/kzvmgmr) it's the biggest field of mayoral candidates since at least the early 1970s.
It's all because of a Nevada Supreme Court decision barring term-limited council members from running for mayor. The decision knocked front-runners Jessica Sferrazza and Dwight Dortch out of the race.
CARLOS MOLINA ARRESTED
Promoter: Lawyers work to free jailed boxer Molina
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The promoter for jailed boxer Carlos Molina says attorneys in Wisconsin, Nevada and California are working to free the title-holding fighter following his arrest earlier this month in Las Vegas.
Molina remained jailed Monday on an immigration hold. He was arrested March 4 on a January 2007 warrant issued in Wisconsin accusing him of failing to register as a sex offender.
The 30-year-old Molina was born in Mexico, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in California say he was previously deported in 2006.
Promoter Leon Margules says Molina faces an April 8 extradition hearing in Las Vegas on the Wisconsin warrant.
Molina missed a scheduled March 8 fight to defend his IBF light middleweight title against Jermall Charlo in Las Vegas.
CARBON MONOXIDE DEATHS-CHARGES
Truckee man charged in 2 carbon monoxide deaths
(Information in the following story is from: Sierra Sun.)
TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — Nevada County prosecutors have filed manslaughter charges against a Truckee-based contractor whose negligence they say produced the carbon monoxide that killed two men at a home north of Lake Tahoe last fall.
Assistant District Attorney Anna Ferguson said 41-year-old Kurt Schoemig was charged Monday with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
She said in a statement he "played a substantial factor" in causing the deaths of 69-year-old Albert Senzatimore of San Jose and 57-year-old Gary Trovinger of Los Gatos at Trovinger's home in Tahoe Donner in October.
Ferguson said Schoemig, president of Cedar Ridge Builders, didn't have the necessary permit for work done last year.
Police say an employee cut a furnace exhaust pipe, but the project wasn't completed, leaving the pipe to vent into the home when the heater started.
APARTMENT HOMICIDE-VEGAS
Vegas man held in girlfriend death after argument
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say a 26-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested on a murder charge after calling 911 and reporting that his girlfriend was unconscious after an argument in their apartment.
Las Vegas police reported Monday that Edward Edgerton was arrested after summoning help for 24-year-old Tyanna Reynolds about 2:30 p.m. Saturday at an apartment on Nellis Boulevard.
Reynolds was pronounced dead later at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center.
The Clark County coroner was investigating the cause of death.
Edgerton told police that he and Reynolds argued about text messages she received from an ex-boyfriend, and that she later collapsed in the shower.
He later told police he grabbed Reynolds' arm hard enough to leave a bruise, struck Reynolds several times with a belt, and pinned her beneath him on the bed.
STREET SLAYING-VEGAS
Arraignment delayed for teen held in Vegas slaying
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Arraignment was postponed for an 18-year-old accused of killing a Las Vegas man and shooting at his wife in a street confrontation following an encounter at a downtown convenience store.
A Las Vegas judge on Monday reset Alan Sosa's hearing for Wednesday to allow time to appoint the Clark County special public defender's office to represent him.
Sosa was arrested March 11 on murder, attempted murder and concealed weapon charges in the March 1 slaying of 27-year-old Juan Edward Cervantes and the alleged shooting at Christine Mata.
Police say shots were fired when the couple confronted Sosa after he left a convenience store on Stewart Avenue and walked with several people on 21st Street.
Sosa also faces a March 25 preliminary hearing in a robbery with a weapon case.
WILDFIRE-BUDGET
Congress studies new way to fund massive wildfires
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A bipartisan effort is underway in Congress to change the way the country pays to battle its most catastrophic wildfires.
Lawmakers from Oregon and Idaho met with Interior Secretary Sally Jewell on Monday to discuss the budget reform.
President Barack Obama's proposed budget would prevent the diversion of money intended for forest thinning and other wildfire prevention efforts.
Historically as fire season progressed, money that had been set aside to thin forests and restore burned land was taken and used to pay for fighting the biggest blazes.
Legislation introduced in Congress would direct that when firefighting costs reach 70 percent of the 10-year average, firefighting agencies could dip into the government's fund for battling natural disasters like hurricanes.
NCAA-THE VEGAS VIEW
Bookies like some NCAA seeds better than others
LAS VEGAS (AP) — There will be 1,000 people lined up early Thursday morning to get a seat at the LVH sports book for the start of the NCAA tournament, and most of them don't care that Michigan State was relegated to a No. 4 seed.
Oddsmakers in this gambling city are treating the Spartans like a No. 1 seed anyway. Their numbers show a team that will likely be favored against everyone except possibly Florida, despite what the NCAA selection committee says.
Michigan State got more respect at the LVH than it did in the NCAA selection room, with oddsmakers making the Spartans a 9-2 pick to win it all. That is second only to Florida at 4-1.
