MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The University of Wisconsin-Madison has agreed to pay a $35,000 fine to settle a number of federal animal welfare violations.

U.S. Department of Agriculture officials issued seven research citations against the university between 2007 and 2013. Violations included euthanizing a dog without the knowledge of the campus' attending veterinarian; failing to note a gerbil was ill; peeling paint in a primate housing facility; expired or improperly labeled medication; and allowing a cat to get burned during an operation. UW-Madison officials say the cat fully recovered.

A statement UW-Madison officials released Monday describing the settlement said USDA could have fined the university twice as much and noted the violations were small given the size of the school's animal program.
