SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Voting has begun in primarily ethnic Russian Crimea where residents are expected to choose a split with Ukraine in favor of ties with Russia. The vote is regarded as illegitimate both by the acting Ukrainian government and by the West. If the referendum passes, Russia faces the prospect of sanctions from Western nations for its involvement.
BRUSSELS (AP) — As residents of the Crimean Peninsula vote on secession from Ukraine, The European Union is preparing to impose sanctions over what the West has declared an illegal referendum. EU foreign ministers will decide tomorrow whether to impose asset freezes and visa sanctions and, if so, who should be targeted. An EU leader's summit Thursday could result in further action.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — An elaborate flight simulator in the home of one of the pilots of the missing Malaysia airliner is a focus of investigators' attention. Malaysia's Transport Ministry says in a news release today that police have searched the homes of both the pilot and co-pilot. The ministry says police also are investigating all crew and passengers, as well as any engineers who may have had contact with the aircraft before takeoff.
BOSTON (AP) — A newspaper is reporting that former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer. The Boston Globe reports that doctors found "an advanced cancer of unknown origin" that had metastasized and were unable to find its source. The 71-year-old Menino, who served as mayor for more than 20 years, told the paper, "we'll get through it."
DELMAR, N.Y. (AP) — The bitterly cold winter has taken a major toll on water birds. The Niagara River corridor from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario is renowned as a spectacular winter haven for hundreds of thousands of water birds. But this year, biologists say hundreds of dead ducks have piled up after the plunging temperatures started icing over nearly the entire Great Lakes, cutting off food supplies.
