BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A sign next to the road advertising craft beer can be a powerful draw to begin with.

But the Idaho Transportation Department says such a sign painted green and yellow to mimic an official highway sign complete with a directional arrow is going too far.

KTVB-TV reports that Woodland Empire Ale Craft put up the sign in Boise on Front Street hoping to lure in some of the 37,000 motorists that pass by every day headed for Interstate-184.

Brewery owner Dusty Schmidt says he checked with the city of Boise before putting up the sign.

But the Idaho Transportation Department says they have jurisdiction and want the sign taken down because it can confuse drivers.

Schmidt says he's disappointed but he'll take the sign down.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A 25-year-old Boise man police say set his BMW on fire to get out of making car payments is facing a charge of third-degree arson.

KTVB-TV reports that Steven M. Carter turned himself in at the Ada County Jail on Tuesday.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office says deputies found the 2006 BMW 325i on Feb. 4 smoldering on a dirt road in the desert near Kuna.

Authorities say Carter told police he drove the car to the desert, poured gas on it, and set it on fire.

Authorities say Carter owes the bank $20,000.

CHMELIK-LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

County commissioner to run for lieutenant governor

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho County Commissioner Jim Chmelik has filed paperwork with the Idaho Secretary of State's Office to run for lieutenant governor.

Chmelik in an announcement on Thursday says he wants to transfer federally owned lands to the state of Idaho.

The announcement sets up a primary challenge with Republican Lieutenant Governor Brad Little.

Chmelik says he's opposed to the state health care exchange under the federal Affordable Care Act.

He also says education standards for Idaho school children should come from Idaho educators and parents.

TROUPIS-ATTORNEY GENERAL

Troupis to run for Idaho attorney general

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Eagle lawyer C.T. "Chris" Troupis has announced his candidacy for Idaho attorney general.

In the announcement Wednesday at the Statehouse, he says he believes the time is right for voters to have a meaningful choice in this year's election. He plans to tap anti-incumbent and tea party sentiment in his campaign.

His candidacy sets up a primary challenge with Republican Attorney General Lawrence Wasden. Wasden is seeking re-election to a fourth four-year term. He ran unopposed when he won his third term in 2010.

Troupis represented the Idaho Republican Party in its successful lawsuit against the state to close the GOP primary.

He says Wasden hasn't done enough to defend the state's natural resources from what Troupis calls a "voracious federal government."

MISSING MOM

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho man released on bond after pleading guilty to a lesser charge in the disappearance a Washington woman and agreeing to testify against her estranged husband is back in custody.

The Lewiston Tribune reports Thursday that David C. Stone is being held in the Latah County Jail after allegations he telephoned a witness on Tuesday.

Second District Court Judge Jeff Brudie is determining if Stone's conditions of probation should be modified or revoked.

Stone pleaded guilty in December to failure to notify law enforcement about a death after Rachael Anderson of Clarkston, Wash., went missing in 2010. Her body hasn't been found.

Stone's guilty plea is part of a deal that calls for him to testify at Charles A. Capone's first-degree murder trial.
