SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (AP) — A convoy of hundreds of Russian troops is heading toward the regional capital, Simferopol on the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine today. On the road from Sevastopol, the Crimean port where Russia maintains a naval base, AP journalists saw 12 military trucks. Russian troops took over the strategic Black Sea peninsula yesterday and are ignoring international protests.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A resolution to the Ukraine crisis won't be easy to find and it's underscored by the differences between President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their strong disagreement over what's at stake in Ukraine was evident in a 90-minute phone call yesterday. Obama called Russia's actions "a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty." Putin says there are real threats to Russian citizens living in Ukraine.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Recent, student-led violent protests in Venezuela will be keeping U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon busy tomorrow. He's to meet in Geneva with Venezuela's foreign minister, who also will speak to the U.N. Human Rights Council. Venezuelans face inflation that hit 56 percent last year, scarce basic necessities and runaway violent crime.
WILLOW, Alaska (AP) — A New Zealand man will be the first musher en route to the town of Nome when the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins today. Curt Perano and 68 other mushers will begin the world's most famous sled dog race by crossing frozen Willow Lake about 50 miles north of Anchorage. It's a staggered start, meaning one musher leaves every two minutes.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Will and Jaden Smith have something they can bond over. They were both awarded Razzies for their performances in "After Earth." Jaden was selected as worst actor for his starring role in the sci-fi flop about a father and son stranded on an untamed earth, while the elder Smith was chosen as worst supporting actor at yesterday's Golden Raspberry Awards. Tonight, the Oscars are awarded.
