SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah lawmaker wants to let perpetually truant students and their parents avoid legal action if the child maintains a high grade-point average. The measure exempts parents from truancy court if their student is 14 or older and has a 3.5 GPA or higher.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A bipartisan group of more than Utah 20 lawmakers and officials met last night to hear gay and transgender people share personal experiences with discrimination. The emotional gathering at the Capitol brought several lawmakers and many of the roughly 200 people in the audience to tears. Two weeks ago 13 protesters were arrested at the Capitol while calling for a state law that protects sexual and gender orientation.

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Steven Powell is due to be released next month from the Washington prison where he's been serving 30 months for voyeurism. Powell is the father-in-law of West Valley City mother Susan Cox-Powell, who disappeared in 2009. His son, Josh Powell, was a suspect before he killed himself and his two children in an explosive house fire in 2012.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gordon Hayward had 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead a balanced Utah Jazz offense in a 109-86 win over the slumping Phoenix Suns last night. The Jazz had seven players with 10 points or more in Utah's second-largest margin of victory this year.
