LAWNDALE, Calif. (AP) — The revelation that the superintendent of a small Southern California school district amassed $663,000 in compensation last year is sparking calls for his resignation and a criminal probe.
KCAL-TV reports a raucous crowd showed up at a special meeting of the Centinela Valley Union High School Tuesday night after a newspaper investigation exposed the scandal.
The Torrance Daily Breeze says (http://bit.ly/1fFmZZz) Superintendent Jose Fernandez's total compensation package eclipsed the $390,000 salary of John Deasy, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Deasy oversees the nation's second-largest school district, while Fernandez oversees four schools in suburban Hawthorne and Lawndale.
Fernandez asserted that he has made improvements since he took over the district in 2008.
