SALT LAKE CITY – NBC announced Tuesday that longtime special correspondent Tom Brokaw has cancer.

Last summer, Brokaw, 74, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which affects blood cells in the bone marrow, NBC said.

“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” Brokaw said in a statement.

Brokaw is making progress and will continue to work, as he has since his diagnosis.

Brokaw has continue his work during treatment, working on NBC News projects, appearing on the “Today" show,” “Nightly News,” “Meet the Press” and MSNBC. Currently, he is reporting with the NBC team on the 2014 Winter Olympics.

He said he wished to keep the matter private, but that he was “very grateful for the interest” in his condition.

Brokaw has been covering news since the 1960s, and has been an NBC correspondent since 1973.
