SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Officials say half of a warehouse where a huge weekend fire burned at the Port of Savannah in Georgia, sending smoke over its historic district, is a dangerous tangle of twisted metal and collapsed walls that is slowing the work of investigators.
Mark Keller, spokesman for Savannah Fire and Emergency Services, said Monday that investigators have been interviewing port workers and inspecting the half of the warehouse that was spared by a firewall. But they haven't been able to enter the rubble to try to pinpoint the source of the blaze.
No one was injured Saturday when 1,800 tons of burning rubber sent up black smoke visible for miles. Residents and visitors to Savannah's downtown historic district were asked to stay indoors if possible Saturday but no evacuations were ordered.
