SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) - El Salvador's top prosecutor has ordered a freeze on the bank accounts and properties of former President Francisco Flores while an investigation continues into his possible mismanagement a decade ago of a $10 million donation from Taiwan to the government.
Attorney General Luis Martinez says the measure is precautionary, but it comes days before Sunday's presidential election. Flores is campaign director for Norman Quijano, candidate of the conservative opposition Nationalist Republic Alliance.
Martinez said Wednesday at a news conference that there are no arrest warrants against Flores, who was president from 1999 to 2004.
The former leader has accused the government of political persecution. He says he received the donation from Taiwan 10 years ago and handed it over to state projects, but hasn't offered proof of that.
