DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) - A 27-year-old seamstress who was among those pulled alive last year from the rubble of a horrific Bangladesh factory collapse has died, officials said Monday. Police are investigating the case as a possible suicide.
The woman, identified by her first name, Salma, was found hanging in her rented home in the capital, Dhaka, on Friday, said Kamal Hossain, a police official. He said authorities were trying to determine if she killed herself.
Salma was rescued several days after the illegally constructed, eight-story Rana Plaza collapsed on April 24, 2013, killing 1,129 people. It was the worst disaster in the history of the garment industry.
There were several seemingly miraculous rescues in the days after the collapse. The most famous was of Reshma Begum, who was pulled alive 17 days after the disaster. Begum currently works for a hotel in Dhaka's upscale Gulshan area.
Bangladesh's garment industry is worth $20 billion annually and supplies global retailers.
