CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Jonathan Mattise, a government and politics reporter for the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers in Florida, is joining The Associated Press to cover West Virginia state government and politics.

Mattise, 28, will be based at the Statehouse in Charleston. He joins the AP from Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, based in Stuart, Fla., where he covered government and politics, including legislative sessions in Tallahassee. In 2012, he won the Florida Society of News Editors' Sunshine Award for best 2012 election coverage with a package of stories that showed how even races at the county level are influenced by shadowy committees rooted in Tallahassee.

The announcement was made Thursday by South Region Editor Lisa Marie Pane.

"Jonathan cut his teeth in one of the most competitive Statehouse press corps in the country," Pane said. "His track record of accountability journalism, of following the money and explaining how government and elected officials are conducting business, will make him a welcome addition to our West Virginia bureau."

Mattise joined Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers in 2010 after a brief stint at the public relations firm of Regan Communications Group in Boston and Jupiter, Fla. He served internships at Scripps Treasure Coast, the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Times-Tribune in Scranton, Pa.

He has a bachelor's degree in communications from Villanova University.
