LONDON (AP) - Sotheby's says jewels and precious possessions once belonging to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor have fetched 620,125 pounds ($1.01 million) in a London auction.
One highlight from the sale of items regarding Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson was a sapphire and diamond Cartier bracelet which sold for 230,500 pounds _ beating a top-end estimate it would fetch 180,000 pounds.
A coral, emerald and diamond choker sold for 110,500 pounds. Cigarette cases given to Edward by his mother, Queen Mary, sold for 5,000 pounds.
Bryony Meredith of Sotheby's said Thursday the results demonstrate a longstanding fascination with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor _ "their lives, their lifestyle and their exceptional taste" _ and their love story.
Edward abdicated in 1936 so he could marry Simpson, an American.
