First Lady Laura Bush will represent the United States at a major United Nations AIDS conference in New York next month, the White House announced Thursday.
Bush will attend a June 2 United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters.
Snow said the gathering is an opportunity to call attention to efforts by the administration of President George W. Bush to combat the deadly disease around the globe.
"The meeting will provide an opportunity to highlight progress the United States has made through the President's emergency plan for AIDS relief and call other nations to heightened action," Snow said.
The UN AIDS conference, which runs from May 31 to June 2, will chart progress made over the past five years in combatting AIDS and HIV.
