ATTICA, N.Y. (AP) - New York State Police say two inmates at the Attica state prison have died of apparent drug overdoses the same day.

The men, ages 25 and 51, were found in separate cells at the Attica Correctional Facility on Thursday. Police said Saturday that a preliminary investigation shows the men died from overdoses, but toxicology results are pending.

The investigation continues.

A third inmate was also taken to the hospital Thursday for an unrelated medical condition.

The maximum-security lockup in western New York was the site of the nation's deadliest prison riot in 1971. Thirty-two inmates and 11 civilian employees died during the five-day siege.

The prison can house up to about 2,200 inmates.
