PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) - People in Trinidad are demanding better child protections after the body of a 6-year-old girl was found stuffed in a plastic bag after police said she had been beaten and raped.
Gender, Youth and Child Development Minister Clifton De Couteau told reporters late Friday that legislators would soon debate bills that would create a national child registry and punish people who fail to report crimes against children.
The announcement comes as an autopsy revealed that Keyana Cumberbatch died of massive trauma to the head.
Police have arrested a male relative whom they say was supposed to take care of Keyana after school while her mother was at work. No one has been charged.
The girl's mother found the body inside her house several days after the girl disappeared.
