This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Growing up with a grandpa who originally founded Western Garden Center, Mike Clayton thought he'd be a dirt farmer his entire life. After all, people have been coming to the Clayton family for years to get help with their gardens or yards.

Western Garden Center is a long-time Utah institution, since it opened in 1957... Founder Sutherland Clayton's vision was to create one location for many different landscaping needs. His grandson Mike Clayton has watched it grow into three separate centers in Salt Lake City, Sandy and West Valley City... He's the third generation in the business, and since he grew up next door to his grandfather, he's never been away from Western Garden Center. But he's learned enough to take the business successfully into a new generation of ownership.

Today, that service has expanded, and now the Western Garden team is active in the wedding industry. Because of their indoor garden, it's become a hotspot for weddings, corporate events, family reunions, birthday parties and quincineras (kin-sin-yare-uhs). Weddings are the most popular event, and at Western Garden Center, they offer every level of service, from simply helping brides plan the event to hosting it all, but they always provide tables, linens, service and a wedding planner.

Mike says Western Garden Center's main focus is to help people with their gardening or landscape questions. Some people come in with pictures of areas they want to develop in their yard and others are looking for a consultation on a mature landscape. Utah is agriculture-oriented, with one of our top activities in gardening and growing our own food.

Right now, a trend Mike is seeing at Western Garden Center is organic solutions for gardening problems. It's grown exponentially over the last 10 years and now touches every aspect of planting and gardening, from fungicides and insecticides to organic treatments for trees and shrubs ... At Western Garden Center they have a dedicated customer base with regulars who come in every year, especially with a focus on plants that grow well in Utah.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
