ALAMOGORDO, N.M., May 19, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The New Mexico Museum of Space History has removed an honoree from its hall of fame after revelations about his Nazi past.
The facility's International Space Hall of Fame in Alamogordo had honored Hubertus Strughold, who died in 1987, for this work in developing the space suit, space capsule and his contributions to space medicine, reports the Albuquerque Tribune quoting spokeswoman Cathy Harper.
But Susan Seligman with the New Mexico Anti-Defamation League said Strughold had directed a program that experimented on Jews and gypsies at the Dachau concentration camp while being the Nazi director of medical research for aviation, the report said. The report said the league uncovered records of Strughold's past and presented them to the museum's commission in January.
The commission last week voted to remove Strughold from the hall, the report said.
"We're very pleased that they came to a decision to remove someone's name from the hall of fame that may not have been deserving of such an honor," Harper said.
