BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus says he won't seek re-election after his current term.

The 6th District congressman made the announcement during a live interview Monday on Birmingham, Ala., station WBRC-TV.

Bachus says he'll continue working hard for the remaining months of his term.

Bachus won an 11th term in Congress last November, easily defeating a Democratic challenger after an unusually stiff challenge in the GOP primary.

Bachus is a longtime member of the House Financial Services Committee, which he chaired for six years. His district includes much of metropolitan Birmingham and central Alabama into Tuscaloosa County.
