MEXICO CITY (AP) - The Mexican government's human rights commission has issued a recommendation calling for federal authorities to investigate the killings of journalists and protect news people from attacks.
The commission says that there has been a "notable increase" in attacks, and that they frequently go unsolved.
The recommendation was issued Tuesday to the Interior Department, the Attorney General's Office and other government agencies. The agencies must either comply with the recommendation or publicly explain why they won't.
By the commission's count, 85 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000, and 20 others have disappeared since 2005. Only 12 of those cases have resulted in convictions.
