BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - Brazil's president has announced a $4 billion program to improve transport, sewage and public housing in Sao Paulo, the nation's biggest city.
That comes in the wake of nationwide protests that saw angered demonstrators demanding better public services in return for the high taxes they pay.
The protests kicked off in Sao Paulo in mid-June and continue to hit streets in Brazil's biggest cities.
Rousseff said Wednesday that providing services for the 20 million people in Sao Paulo's metropolitan area presents a stiff challenge for the government.
Some $1.5 billion of the investments will focus on transport _ in particular road corridors dedicated to buses.
